River Division 535 Photos submitted by: Gary Holmes

Why would any PBR sailor want to take down their Radar dome and put up an M60, send half their crew ashore with VN SF/ARVN troops?

Vinh Te in January of 1970.

You say keep the Radar and stay on the boat -- this part of the canal with little vegetation and rice fields. Other parts have heavy vegetation making it more interesting. One boat would setup on each bank.

River Section 523, during Tet '68. This PBR was sunk. Ken Kalish was sleeping near the after .50 when she got hit. ENS Berg was under the forward .50 mount. Two others were aboard, don't know their names. All got out OK with only minor wounds. Ken Kalish was in the water for 20 minutes before crewmembers from PBR 115 pulled him out. Notice the .51 caliber holes in the boat. River Section 523, PBR 53 in late '67, North of Purple Heart Alley,
near the MO Cai Canal. The guy with the big smile is Jean Paul, a Canadian GMG3. Don't know his last name or the names of the others.
